About

Everyone has their own story – Ours at August Maine Coons

At August Maine Coons, our passion for cats is more than just a hobby—it’s a way of life. What began as a love for beautiful, affectionate cats has grown into a family-centered breeding program focused on raising healthy, well-socialized Maine Coon and Ragdoll kittens that bring joy to families across the country.

Our Journey in the Cat Fancy

Our involvement in the cat world began in 2012 through showing and breeding Ragdolls. Through years of attending cat shows, traveling across the country, and learning from respected breeders and judges, we quickly developed a deep appreciation for the dedication and responsibility that comes with breeding exceptional cats.

While showing Ragdolls, we were constantly mesmerized by the size, beauty, and outgoing personalities of the Maine Coon. Every show seemed to draw us back to these incredible gentle giants. Their playful nature, loving temperaments, and striking appearance captured our hearts, eventually leading us to begin our Maine Coon program.

Today, our cattery focuses on producing Maine Coons and Ragdolls that are not only beautiful, but healthy, affectionate, and well adjusted for family life.

Why We Breed

Our love for Maine Coons and Ragdolls comes from the happiness they bring into people’s lives. There is nothing more rewarding than watching families fall in love with one of our kittens and seeing those kittens grow into cherished companions. Every review we receive is a meaningful reminder of why we are passionate about raising healthy, well-socialized Maine Coon kittens for loving families.

We believe that responsible breeding means far more than simply producing kittens. Our goal is to raise kittens with exceptional temperaments, strong health backgrounds, and the confidence to thrive in their new homes.

Every breeding decision we make is carefully planned with health, temperament, structure, and personality in mind.

Our Breeding Philosophy

At August Maine Coons, we believe showing cats is one of the most important parts of maintaining and improving a breeding program. Showing allows breeders to receive valuable feedback and honest opinions from judges and experienced peers.

If breeders are not showing their cats, they are missing the opportunity for criticism, mentorship, and improvement in their programs.

We actively participate in both CFA and TICA cat shows throughout the country. These experiences help us evaluate our breeding program, continue learning, and ensure we are producing cats that meet the standards of the breed while also maintaining the loving personalities Maine Coons are known for.

Our Health Testing Philosophy

The health of our cats and kittens is one of our highest priorities.

All of our breeding cats undergo health testing prior to breeding. We work hard to make thoughtful breeding decisions and strive to produce healthy kittens with strong genetics and excellent temperaments.

Health testing includes DNA screening, cardiac certification scans, hip evaluations, and additional testing depending on the individual cat and pairing. We believe responsible breeding begins long before kittens are born.

Raising Well-Socialized Kittens

One of the things we are most proud of is the socialization of our kittens.

All kittens are raised directly in our home, underfoot as part of everyday life. From the beginning, they are exposed to normal household activity and experiences to help them transition confidently into their future homes.

Our kittens are introduced to:

  • vacuum cleaners
  • barking dogs
  • doorbells
  • elevators
  • rides in cars
  • loud household noises
  • children
  • visitors
  • everyday family activity
  • multiple baths
  • weekly nail trims and grooming
  • Trips to the vet with lots of socializing

This early exposure helps create confident, outgoing kittens with wonderful temperaments.

A Family Effort

August Maine Coons is truly a family effort.

Our home consists of Lonny and Buffy, working together to care for our cats and kittens every single day. Buffy handles much of the showing and traveling, while Lonny stays home caring for the crew—especially kittens during their most important developmental stages.

Our children are also heavily involved in socializing kittens and helping throughout the cattery. They even help take many of the photos you see shared on our website and social media pages.

We believe the love and attention our kittens receive from the entire family helps shape the affectionate personalities they are known for.

Our Cattery Setup

We have carefully designed our house setup to balance both socialization and comfort for our cats.

Our cats are part of our home and daily life, but we also understand the importance of privacy and quiet spaces for pregnant females and mothers raising young kittens. Our setup allows moms and kittens to have peaceful areas when needed while still ensuring kittens are exposed to regular family interaction and socialization.

More Than Just Cat Shows

Showing cats has allowed us to travel all over the country, meet incredible people, and create lifelong friendships within the cat fancy community. We are thankful for the opportunities this journey has given our family and grateful for every judge, mentor, fellow breeder, and kitten family who has supported us along the way.

At the end of the day, our greatest accomplishment is not the titles or awards—it’s knowing our kittens are bringing love and happiness into homes across the country.

We are honored to be part of so many families’ stories and look forward to continuing our journey with these amazing cats for years to come.

The History of Maine Coons

Maine Coons are believed to have originated centuries ago in the state of Maine, USA. Their name is thought to come from their resemblance to raccoons—especially in the markings and appearance of their kittens.

Known for their playful love of water, Maine Coons often enjoy splashing and exploring wet environments. Their skilled, dexterous paws allow them to grab and handle food with remarkable ease. A distinctive feature of many Maine Coons is a subtle “V” shaped marking near their eyes, reminiscent of a raccoon’s facial mask.

Physically, Maine Coons are renowned for their tufted ears and furry toes, along with their thick, luxurious coats and long, bushy tails. They mature slowly, often continuing to grow until they reach 4 to 5 years of age, making their development uniquely gradual compared to other breeds.

As kittens, Maine Coons are highly interactive, sociable, and adaptable. They typically get along well with people, other cats, dogs, and even other animals. Their affectionate nature makes them loyal and loving companions, treasured by families everywhere.

Often described as having “dog-like” personalities, Maine Coons are intelligent and playful—some even learn to fetch! Their vocalizations are charmingly unique, beginning with chirps and trills as kittens and evolving into ongoing “conversations” with their humans throughout their lives.
